Addressing the Grievous Fault of Clergy Abuse
An Open Letter to the Faithful
from The Most Rev. Joseph V. Brennan
Brothers and Sisters,

In May of last year, I announced the Diocese of Fresno's plan to Atone for the Suffering Inflicted by Clergy Abuse, and how that plan includes reorganizing our Diocese by filing for bankruptcy. Today I announce that the Diocese has filed a Voluntary Petition for chapter 11 bankruptcy with the United States Bankruptcy Court here in Fresno County. I am clear-sighted that this path is the only path that will allow us to handle claims of sexual abuse with fair, equitable compassion while simultaneously ensuring the continuation of ministry within our Diocese.
Our Church must address the suffering that victims of clergy sexual abuse endure. We know the sin; it will always be before us. Now that we have entered a journey of conversion through contrition and acknowledgment of the victims' suffering, we must enter a path of reconciliation which includes resolving the victims' claims.
During the reorganization process, the bankruptcy court will oversee the allocation of available assets to satisfy the claims against the Diocese. Victim survivors of clergy sexual abuse will be represented in the court supervised proceeding and a fund will be established by the court for distribution to victim survivors.
By implementing Safe Environment protocols including background checks, fingerprinting, trainings and so much more, we continue our commitment to creating the safest possible environment for our youth and vulnerable. I will continue to confront allegations of abuse or any wrongdoing with diligence and care.

Una Carta abierta para los Fieles de parte del Reverendísimo Joseph V. Brennan
Hermanos y hermanas,
En mayo del año pasado, anuncié el plan de la Diócesis de Fresno para expiar el sufrimiento infligido por los abusos del clero, y cómo ese plan incluye la reorganización de nuestra Diócesis mediante la declaración de quiebra. Hoy les anuncio que la Diócesis ha presentado una Petición Voluntaria de quiebra bajo el capítulo 11 ante el Tribunal de Quiebras de los Estados Unidos aquí en el Condado de Fresno. Tengo claro que este camino es el único que nos permitirá tratar las denuncias de abusos sexuales con una compasión justa y equitativa, garantizando al mismo tiempo la continuación del ministerio en nuestra diócesis.
Nuestra Iglesia debe abordar el sufrimiento que padecen las víctimas de abusos sexuales por parte del clero. Conocemos el pecado; siempre estará ante nosotros. Ahora que hemos entrado en un camino de conversión a través de la contrición y el reconocimiento del sufrimiento de las víctimas, debemos entrar en un camino de reconciliación que incluya la resolución de las reclamaciones de las víctimas.
Durante el proceso de reorganización, el tribunal de quiebras supervisará la asignación de los activos disponibles para satisfacer las demandas contra la Diócesis. Las víctimas supervivientes de abusos sexuales del clero estarán representadas en el procedimiento supervisado por el tribunal y éste establecerá un fondo para distribuirlo entre las víctimas supervivientes.
Al implementar los protocolos de Ambiente Seguro que incluyen la verificación de antecedentes, toma de huellas dactilares, entrenamiento, y mucho más, continuamos nuestro compromise de crear un ambiente lo más seguro posible para nuestros jóvenes y personas vulnerables. Continuaré haciendo frente a las acusaciones de abuso o cualquier irregularidad con diligencia y cuidado.
